Olympus 1030 SW

My feature, Digital Cameras for the Road, was published today at Forbes.com.

Hopefully people find it helpful as summer approaches and they begin to plan their vacations. I’ve put together a collection of cameras that will suit most everybody, from budget-minded casual shooters to high-end photophiles.

Even the low end cameras are pretty good. Just a few years ago, their specs would’ve been considered top of the line. They’re still good, but technological creep has continued upward and onward (for better or worse).

The most intriguing camera in the article is the Olympus 1030 SW (pictured), which is tailor made for rugged adventurers. It’s crush-proof, freeze-proof, drop-proof, and water-proof. Olympus has always made very durable cameras, but this one is very eye-catching, as it’s incredibly small, portable, and best of all, packed with a big 10-megapixel sensor.

One of my freelancers tested it for a Digital Camera HQ review and confirmed its integrity. I made sure to get permission from Olympus before we started putting their loaner camera in the bathtub or dropped it from six feet.

Stay tuned for more tech pieces, I have a lot of stuff coming down the pike, much of it focused on camcorders, both high-end HD and budget standard definition stuff.

Update: Canoe.ca has picked this article up. So has The Globe and Mail. And the CBC. I’m such a big deal in Canada. Picked up by MSN. And Onet.pl [Poland], again. MSN Arabia, too, where digital cameras continue to be filed under “Women > Relationships.”
