The Bear | Andrew Krivak

Books | February 11, 2020

My review of Andrew Krivak’s lastest novel, The Bear, ran today at WBUR’s The ARTery. Krivak tells the story of the last human on Earth, a 12-year old girl who travels through the resurgent wilderness with a bear following the sudden death of her father.

The story is set several generations after the end of civilization, and though it could easily have wallowed in the bleak, dystopian mood common to post-apocalyptic fiction, Krivak instead depicts his nearly post-human world as rather pleasant, all things considered.

Humans, frankly, do not seem to be missed all that much.
