What’s Happening Now: Sept/Oct | Michael Patrick Brady

What’s Going On
I just finished The Wordy Shipmates, Sarah Vowell’s sympathetic yet realistic look upon Boston’s Puritans, and how their ideals, goals, and actions inform modern America. I will be reviewing it for PopMatters. I also finished Leo Hollis’ excellent London Rising, a sweeping account of what is essentially the birth of modernity, science, and enlightenment told through the stories of some 17th century English notables. My review of The Black Death was included in the “PopMatters Picks” column, which is syndicated to McClatchy newspapers, like the Modesto Bee.

My last Forbes.com piece, Seeking a Greener HDTV, was picked up by the usual Canadian suspects, The CBC and Canoe.ca, as well as Weather.com. I’m currently working on two HDTV pieces for Forbes.com for October. I also have a review of Benoit Pioulard’s Temper (Kranky) pending at The Phoenix.

Vowell will be in the area touring behind the book on October 10th and 11th, first at the Brookline Booksmith in Coolidge Corner then at the First Unitarian Church in Harvard Square. I’m hoping to hit one of them.

I love this style: Carlton Banks, Kanye West, and the rise of the NBA nerd.

Ta-Nehisi Coates offers a powerful response to that grotesque Forbes column that’s making the rounds.

The Seinfeld episode where Jerry and George have an awkward night out with Elaine’s writer father is based on a real-life event where Larry David was forced to entertain his girlfriend’s father—Richard Yates.

I agree with this Globe editorial: veto casino gambling in Massachusetts.
