Top TVs For Watching The Super Bowl at Forbes.com

Super Bowl Football HDTV

My fifth article for Forbes.com, Top TVs For Watching The Super Bowl, was published today. In it, I highlight some important facts about this year’s broadcast of Super Bowl XLII that should factor into your HDTV purchase, should you cave in and decide to get one for the big game.

There’s also a selection of HDTVs that I think would make excellent purchases. Those TVs are affordable, have a great reputation, and most importantly, are very very big.

I think the most relevant piece of information in the article regards HD resolution. If you were to go out and purchase an HDTV for the sole purpose of watching the game, you’d probably splurge and get a top-of-the-line 1080p set, think that it will provide the best quality picture.

Well, FOX Sports doesn’t broadcast HD in 1080p (in fact, nobody broadcasts anything in 1080p). FOX Sports broadcasts in 720p. Going with a TV that has 720p instead of 1080p will save you a couple hundred bucks.

The only reason you might want 1080p for the Super Bowl is if you’re going really big, over 50-inches. Otherwise, it’s a waste of cash that could be spent on food.

Go Pats.

Update: This article has been picked up by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, ABC News and The Globe and Mail …and Canoe … and Yahoo! Canada.

I have no idea why Canadians are so interested in the Super Bowl.

I agree with this Globe editorial: veto casino gambling in Massachusetts.
