My First Book Review - My review of The Jamestown Project by Karen Ordahl Kupperman, at PopMatters.

The book was very interesting, not as compelling as Nathaniel Philbrick's Mayflower, but still a very worthwhile read. Much of the action of the book takes place not in Jamestown but in Europe itself, and Kupperman does a superb job in illuminating the society and culture of 15th century Europe as it dealt with a number of concerns and problems that would seem very familiar to contemporary Westerners: internal religious and political strife, a perceived Islamic threat, and the rise of corporate influences.

The Itch. Lesch-Nyhan.

Mad Men returns on July 27th, looking to inherit the title of best cable drama now that The Wire is finished. This NYT profile of its creator is a nice aperitif.

If only the Bible were as well written as Paradise Lost. It's… inspired.

It's a great time to be a film critic. Not so great to be a film fan.

"I want to give a picture of Dublin so complete that if the city one day suddenly disappeared from the earth it could be reconstructed out of my book." It's Bloomsday.
